There are some flavors you don’t have to explain. One bite of Lapsi is enough.

That unmistakable combination of Sourness, Tanginess, and a little sweetness is familiar to many of us in Nepal. Fresh Lapsi finds its way into Aachar, Chutneys, Snacks, and all kinds of homemade treats. For many, it is more than just a fruit. It is a flavor tied to a particular season, a particular place, and a familiar part of growing up in Nepal.
Just like everything in Nature, Lapsi Fruit also has one limitation: you cannot keep it fresh forever. Like many fresh fruits, it has a limited season and a limited shelf life. Once the fresh fruit is gone, that distinctive flavor becomes harder to keep around. That got us thinking:
A familiar fruit with more potential
What if we could make Lapsi easier to keep, easier to use, and available beyond its fresh season ?
A familiar fruit with more potential
Lapsi, also known as Hog Plum, is a fruit native to parts of South and Southeast Asia and is particularly familiar in Nepal. It is valued for its distinctive tart flavor and is commonly enjoyed in different forms. In Nepal, it is especially well known as an ingredient in Aachar, chutneys, candies and snacks. Yet there is another side to Lapsi that is worth exploring.
Like many agricultural products, much of its value can be tied to the fresh fruit itself. Once harvested, it needs to be used or processed relatively quickly. This is where Food Drying becomes interesting. Drying is one of the oldest ways of preserving food. By removing much of the moisture, a food can become more stable, easier to store, and more convenient to use. And when that dried ingredient is turned into a powder, its possibilities can expand even further.
Why turn Lapsi into powder?
We didn’t want to change what makes Lapsi special. The goal was simply to make it more convenient. A powder can be stored in a kitchen without taking up much space. It can be measured easily and added directly to different foods whenever a little extra tang is needed.
Instead of waiting for the fresh fruit to appear, you can simply reach for the powder. A little can go into a Daal, add tang to a Chutney, become part of an Aachar, sprinkled into Snacks or used wherever you want that familiar Lapsi flavor. The idea is simple: take something familiar and make it easier to use.

From Lapsi Fruit to Lapsi Powder
This idea eventually became one of the first products we wanted to create at Anek Naturals.
We source Lapsi from Hills of Nepal and process it into a convenient powder while keeping the ingredient list simple. Our Lapsi Powder is made from the Lapsi fruit, with no added preservatives and no added color. The result is a simple ingredient designed for everyday use – not something complicated, but something that can quietly become useful in your kitchen. And that simplicity is important to us.
We believe good food doesn’t always need a long ingredient list or complicated processing. Sometimes, it is about taking a good ingredient and finding a better way to use it.
So, how can you use Lapsi Powder?
You don’t need to completely change the way you cook. Think of Lapsi Powder as a convenient way to add a little tang wherever you think a dish needs it.
- in Daal: A small amount can add a bright, tangy note to everyday Daal.
- in Aachar and Chutney: Lapsi’s natural tartness makes it an easy ingredient to experiment with when preparing pickles, chutneys, and other condiments.
- with Vegetables: Try adding a little to vegetable dishes when you want to bring some acidity and extra flavor.
- in Snacks: Lapsi Powder can also be used as a seasoning for snacks, giving them a familiar Nepali tang.
The best part is that there isn’t just one “correct” way to use it. It is an ingredient, so your kitchen gets to decide what comes next.
More than just one fruit
For us, Lapsi is also an example of something much bigger.
Nepal has an enormous variety of Fruits, Herbs, Spices, Grains, and other Agricultural products. Many of them have distinctive flavors and Traditional uses, but there is still a lot of room to explore how they can be processed into convenient, value-added foods.
That is one of the ideas behind Anek Naturals.
We want to explore what can happen when familiar Nepali ingredients are given a little more life beyond their fresh form.
Lapsi Powder is one small beginning. And perhaps the most interesting part is that a fruit many of us already know can still have something new to show us.
A taste of Nepal, made simple.
Lapsi has always had a place in Nepali food. We are simply finding another way to bring that flavor into the kitchen.
